A Tour of My House
Here is my house about fifteen minutes after I got my keys on Friday.
Today, in a fit of what I call “Fuck it, this is MY house, damn it!” enthusiasm I tore up all of my carpets. Didn’t take that long and I ended up coughing a lot afterward due to a mushroom cloud of pet hair getting kicked up into my face.
In a way, I’m glad I took the time to vacuum and shampoo the carpets before ripping them up or it would have been a lot worse. That’s right. These carpets were so dirty I had to clean them up just so I could throw them away.
Lo, the carpets are slain.
Now… I just need to figure out how to put down a new floor I can’t afford. Again, first world problems. I’m mostly still ecstatic that I own a home.
Although I’m still coming to grips with the fact that there is a house in this world… and that it belongs to me.
Anyhow, it’s become clear to me that I might not be able to actually live in this house until the middle of next week. I have a refrigerator coming quite soon, as well as plates and bowls, etc… but there’s a lot of stuff I need to throw away and a bit of plumbing I need to do before I can actually inhabit there in any kind of safe way. Also, I need to paint. But I’m working on it very diligently and expect it to be done quite soon.
However, this has pushed back my plans a few weeks. Soul-Shaped Atoms is coming along nicely but it is by no means actually done. I need this to be a polished gem since it will be my first “New Work” and I need it to shine. However, since it thematically fits in quite well with Valentine’s Day, I think I will publish it then.
Ripping out the nasty carpets just drives you towards your next project that much faster. Flooring. FTW. Camping out in your new digs sans properly working plumbing however..ech. Kind of tarnishes the gilding on the lily. Still. Kudos.
I do believe that you’re almost Home.
I am extremely excited that someone else on this planet uses the phrase “gilding the lily”.
Nice! It looks really open. I’m digging how much light is in it. Try looking for a place that sells remnant carpeting. It’s a lot cheaper.
That’s a really great house! I love the windows in the front and the massive yard! Totally jealous of your mortgage payment.
First off, CONGRATS on your house! That’s so great!! I wanted to say that if you wanted to do wood flooring, I can tell you that I, a GIRL with very little construction experience (I worked on stage crew in high school, so I knew how to use a circular saw and stuff) installed laminate flooring (the kind that locks together and doesn’t use nails or glue) in my townhouse by myself in two days. It’s WAY easier if you do it before you move anything in, and remove the baseboards first… but yeah, totally doable and over 10 years later mine are still looking nice. I would suggest pulling the baseboards off first, painting them outside, while they’re drying paint the walls, then do the floors (whatever kind) and then put the baseboards back. You can do one room at a time this way and not have to worry about drop cloths or taping off anything other than windows and the ceiling if you’re not into having the walls and ceiling the same color.
Heh, thanks Nico. I’m even more linguistic in person. I like throwing down the “spanners”, the “cooth”, and the “foppish”. often in one sentence.
